Duncan I. Mackie, PhD, is the Director of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics at Bud & Mary’s, where he leverages his expertise in drug discovery, cellular and olecular biology, and G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) pharmacology to explore the therapeutic potential of cannabinoids. His work focuses on their interactions with the endocannabinoid system, identifying novel drug targets, and investigating their implications for treating various medical conditions.
A recognized leader in cannabis research, Dr. Mackie holds a Federal DEA Schedule I Researcher license to study cannabis and cannabinoids and their effects on neurodegeneration. His wide-ranging research interests span all areas of cannabis and cannabinoid research, from testing methods and standards, label compliance, basic cellular and mechanistic studies, advanced models of neuroinflammation, pharmacology and novel biosensors to even establishing FDA-approved clinical trials. At Bud & Mary’s, he has developed a rigorous, externally funded research program centered around the endocannabinoid system and its role in modulating the immune system during the onset of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.
Dr. Mackie has published in many high-impact journals, such as the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences and the Journal of Experimental Medicine, and he has three provisional patents pending for his innovative findings. He is a sought-after speaker and lecturer on cannabis and science-related topics at various conferences and events and currently holds a Graduate Faculty appointment at the Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus.
Dr. Mackie is a member of the American Chemical Society and the Colorado Clinical & Translational Sciences Institute (CCTSI) at the University of Colorado, Denver. He also served as a founding member of the International Chemical Biology Society, participated in the Prostate Cancer Research Program at the University of Iowa, and was previously a member of the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics.
Dr. Mackie is a former two-sport collegiate athlete in Track and Field and Swimming, a 13-time All-American swimmer, and a former school record holder in the 100-breaststroke. During graduate school, he was a founding member of the University of Iowa’s Trihawks Triathlon team, where he competed in the USA Triathlon’s Collegiate Club National Championships. He still competes in various distances of triathlons and Ironman 70.3 races. In his free time, Dr. Mackie enjoys bonsai and gardening, photography, reading high fantasy, attending and dressing up for the Colorado Renaissance Festival and spending time with his doggies and daughters (girl dad 100%).
Dr. Mackie earned his B.S. in Mathematics from the University of the Cumberlands and a Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Sciences and Experimental Therapeutics from the University of Iowa. He conducted post-doctoral research in the Department of Cellular Biology and Physiology at UNC-Chapel Hill.
